It probably will run down the sides of the cake. The best way to write things on the side is after the cake is fully cooled, then frost the cake. Put the cake in the fridge for a few minutes until the frosting is completely cool to the touch. Then try adding the writing on the side. I would do it shortly before presenting the cake, because any kind of heat will probably make the writing slide down.
So squirt away, but ice it first.
