Question:
Why do diner's place their utensils on the left side when majority of the users are right handed?

Answer:
Because they, the diners, are using their right hand to drink, and the person dining, would most likely be paying more attention to the people they are with, than setting down their drink, and if the utensils were in the path, the drink would likely spill, and make a mess, that the diner would have to replace free of charge, so they don't look cheap or stingy.
