Patron is very good usually $30 a fifth my favorite is Cuervo Gold right around $27 a litre. If you like a stronger flavor Cabawaba regular is $32.
Sauza Hornitos. Like Patron, it's also 100% Agave (Jose Cuervo is about 60%, and the rest is cheap grain alcohol from what I understand.) But, unlike Patron, Hornitos is much cheaper. In any case, Hornitos is a very good inexpensive substitute for more expensive tequilas. Also, for shooting, I prefer it chilled.
1800 tequila will be the best you can get for less than 40 bucks, enjoy...
I like Sauza Hornito a lot. It's about 25 bucks a fifth. Around here Patron is about 45-50 bucks a bottle so it's up to you if you want to add a few more dollars for a good tequila. Also if you're willing to add a few bucks, Cabo Wabo is a fantastic tequila at about 50 bucks a bottle.
It depends on where you live as to how much it will cost. Cuervo has several different options for under $40. A cheaper alternative to Cuervo is Sauza. Sauza Hornitos and Commemorativo are both nice and smooth, good for shots. Sauza Gold is better if mixing it into a margarita. Patron is usually over $40, but the best thing close to it is Cabo Wabo (cool bottle, too). It all is going to depend on your area, whether you want silver (clear) or gold (reposado, usually), and how you're drinking it.

Jose Cuervo is crap. Don't waste your money.
Patron puts out a smaller size that costs around $25. For some reason I only see it behind the counter.
