I have used dextrose in the past, but don't have any at the moment. Is granulated (white) sugar ok to use for bottling? Is it fermentable?
Answer:
Yes, you can use regular sugar. Just like dextrose powder, it is almost totally fermentable. Therefore won't impact the flavor profile of the beer you've made, especially since you are only going to use a small amount. Dextrose is probably a bit better but unless you are making an EXTREMELY light beer I doubt anyone will notice.
No
The vast majority of beers are made with malted barley, hops, water and yeast. Hops are used to impart bitterness, flavour and aroma to beer, and also for their natural antiseptic qualities. The yeast in beer causes fermentation.
Beer uses varying ingredients, production methods and traditions. The type of yeast and production method may be used to classify beer into ale, lager and spontaneously fermented beers. Some beer writers and organisations differentiate and categorise beers by various factors into beer styles.
no no no....
Yes you can. It can tweak the flavor just a little bit...or at least has the potential more so than just dextrose. The yeast has to split the sucrose before actually consuming the component sugars. When I say "tweak" it's just in the context of altering the flavor a little from what you might be after, but not at all ruining the beer.
If you do plan on using sugar, find organic minimally processed sugar. Regular white sugar has been processed to the point of being nearly nutritionless, and has LESS flavor than organic.
