It will only affect your work significantly if you are spending more time drinking than studying. I do drink but i do so in moderation now, and drink non-alchoholic drinks inbetween. When i was younger i used to go out to bars and drink far too much with my friends, i wish i'd been aware that it puts a huge strain on the kidneys and liver. Just don't over do it, stay with in the safe limits, don't drink and drive and drink lots of water before during and after.

It is all on the ambition that you have to succeed in school. Brain cells are damaged, but hwt about you reputation. WHat if you do something dumb and the Dean of the college catches you because you were drunk. What if you kill someone drinking and driving? There are many consequences that you may face as a result of drinking. Anything in moderation is good. Drinking is alright as long as you don't get hammered every night.

Alcohol, illegal drugs and quite a few substances similar can most definitely cause permanent brain damage thus affecting intelligence and brain fuction. This damage is cumulative and cannot be "healed" as the brain does not regenerate. Once damage happens it cannot go away. The only way to prevent further damage is to stop doing the behavior damaging it.
Your grades can be effected in the short term by impairment while actually drunk, and also not learning the information or forgetting it as a result of excessive drinking.
Most brain damage takes time, but huge quantities of alcohol and drugs can cause immediate and acute brain damage.
I see this quite often as an RN.
