Making wine is fairly simple. The only two ingredients that you need are grape juice and yeast. The equipment that you need depends on the size of the batch that you want to make. I’ll assume you want to make a 5 gallon batch.
1a. If you are starting with grapes, crush the grapes and break them up as much as you can. Grapes have natural pectin in them so you will need to add a packet of pectic enzyme that will dissolve the pectin. They also have wild yeast spores on them so you will need to add a packet of a chemical that kills the yeast(campden tablets). Both of these are available at your local homebrew store. After the chemicals sit with the mashed grapes for about 24 hours, strain out the skins and pulp and pour the grape juice into a 5 gallon bucket.
1b. If you are just starting with grape juice(which I recommend for a first time wine maker) you don’t need to do anything to it. You can use regular grape juice from the store, or you can purchase grape juice for a particular type of wine from a homebrew store. They sell juice for merlot, cabernet, and all of the common wine types that you see in the store. Pour your grape juice into a 5 gallon bucket.
2. Pour a packet of wine yeast (also available from your local homebrew store) into a bowl of warm water and stir until all of the yeast is dissolved. Pour this into your bucket with the grape juice.
3. Cover the bucket and let it sit for about a couple weeks. Do not make a tight seal, because the yeast gives off carbon dioxide gas as it ferments and could cause your container to explode if it is sealed tight. The bucket should be covered completely to prevent dust and bacteria from getting into the wine and spoiling it.
4. After a couple weeks, siphon the wine into glass(not plastic)containers and seal them. There will be a yeasty sludge at the bottom of your bucket. Make sure that you don’t get the sludge in with the wine or it will have a cloudy color. Let the bottles sit in a cool dark place for at least a month before your start drinking.
This is about the simplest way to make wine, but I am including a link that gives a bit more of a detailed description and a few tips for ensuring a quality product. Also a link that sell winemaking supplies online. Good luck!
