They are called "Mason jars", and real mason jars are what folks used to do "home-pickling" or making jams & jellies in. They were also the traditional vessel to test the "moonshine" in, so now they actually make fake jars with handles on them to use as cups!

The folks you see using them in American movies are probably supposed to be drinking "Planters Punch", a lethal concoction also traditionally quaffed from a mason jar.

Moonshine (homemade whiskey) is traditionally served in a Mason (fruit) jar...
I have a set of glasses that look like masson jars I love them they are thicker than regular glasses have a handle and keep things colder than regular glasses really user friendly.
I used to see ice-tea glasses that were made to look like mason jars, but I think it may be out of fashion now. I haven't seen any lately.
they've always done that at the local roadhouses where I live. I like it more for your money!
i drink out of mason jars every now and then, when drinking moonshine or home-made wine.
