What do I do ? Can I still drink the wine? It is a white wine I bought from a wine party someone was having. It comes from Calif. Can anyone help? Will I get sick? Does anyone know how this happened?

Answer:
Hi there, let's slow down a moment. If a wine is 'corked' the smell is unmistakably, and distinctly unpleasantly musty. Take a good ol' whiff of the business end of the cork -- the end that faced the wine in the bottle -- and your nose will tell you a great deal. If it merely smells of 'wine' (compare by smelling inside the neck of the bottle) there's not a lot wrong. Second guess yourself, and hold up the bottle to the light and look for any cloudiness... None there? You're still OK then. Smell cork and bottle neck a second time. Still freshly 'winey'? Time to stop worrying. Now pour yourself the merest dram in a clean glass. Smell it again, swirl the wine, smell it another time and then taste. It's probably just fine. If not (and that little sip won't harm you at all: just spit it out if 'off') -- or you find out you just don't like it <g> -- then the drain is the right place for it. Otherwise, put your feet up and just enjoy your wine.

Hope this helps.
Wine can go bad, if the cork had mildew on it, i'd just toss it. You could get really sick.

Thats a bummer though :(. Im guessing it was improperally stored before you bought it. Wine should be kept in a cool dry place.
I would drink it come what may. Bottoms up.
OK, slow down, you are fine. Now you say there is mildew on the cork?? Well, from experience that is a bit strange but... you could have a bottle that leaked through the cork and mold formed. If the wine has been kept straight up and not on the side then the wine is probably ok. Try the wine and be objective, taste and smell it in the glass, if it smells like mold or had a faintly moldy taste then dump it. Life is too short to drink bad wine.
if it had mildew on it, then it wasn't sealed right, It probably isn't any good. it should have a seal .
Yuck. Throw it out. The odds that the wine is still good are slim; I wouldn't want to drink it now.

If wine isn't stored properly it can go bad a few ways. Mildew in the cork suggests something got *in* either before the wine was corked (poor sanitation at the bottling plant?) or after, which would most likely be caused if the wine bottle was stored upright too long and the cork dried out and shrunk. For this reason, long term, wine should be stored sideways at a slight angle so the cork remains wet.
I think you should just try it. It might still be good. It could also be fermented though. Never know til you try!
My husband is a big wine drinker. He says you won't get sick.
it sounds like your bottle of wine is (corked)
air has got in through the cork or it has impurties in it.
take it back to the shop for a exchange
You can try the wine safely, but it seems as if the cork has become contaminated. This usually means the wine will also be bad, but you may be in luck so taste it.
You'll know as the wine will taste mouldy and musty, a bit like old socks. (The actual chemical there is trichloroanisol)
They use molds and yeasts to make wine. You have to expect there to be signs of it on the cork. That is just a good sign of aged wine. It isn't pathogenic, so you will be fine to drink it.
Sounds like the wine is off. This can happen when air gets through the cork.

I have drank 'off' wine before with no ill effects, but maybe i was just lucky.
I've had similar things happen. It DOES NOT mean that the wine is corked - other answerers are flat out wrong. Sometimes it just happens.

Pour a small glass and try some. If it tastes alright, then go ahead with it. If it tastes bad, then return it to the person you bought it from.

Salut!
you sure its mold? it could be sulphite from the wine itself.
heres a good test to see if its drinkable.
use your nose and mouth
taste it. if it tastes ok like wine and it doesnt smell of rotten eggs then it will be fine to drink.
weird for a commercial wine to have mold as they use strict rules to make sure that never happens.
I am a homebrewer and have had mold growing on the inside of carboys on the corks. I never throw the batch out I just wash the cork and put it back in.
mold is everywhere and some kinds will not hurt you.
if there is mildew on the cork it means nothing... you need to open it and smell the wine, if it smells like rotten wine, then it is "Corked" and the wine is ruined. if it doesnt then the wine is fine.
