Depending on the company you keep, some people will not care what you have; some classes have bourbon rules. A scotch and soda may be perfectly fine (even in front of your boss on Sunday), but a jack and coke should be saved for later.

Seriously though, it depends on your comfort zone and what you can handle. Figure out about how long it'll take to make dinner, then calculate how many drinks you can handle in that time.
