Well, it's only 10:51 am here so wine doesn't sound too appealing, but if it were 7 pm, I would probably pick a merlot, and in the time it's out, a gamay beaujolais.

both are great just to sip and have some good conversation.
reisling is made from baby grapes when the flavor is perfect.
icevine is when the grapes are still on the vine after the frost (hence the name ice) the wine is white and alittle tart but really good.
depends on the ocasion, but there is a really nice spanish rioja called "Carlos Del Castillo VII" but im not sure if you can buy it in the UK

If it is red let's push the boat out and go for a big aged Barolo from Italy, ooohhh it is like red coloured sexiness.
If we are going the whole hog and drinking bubbly I would bring at least two. Segura Viudas Cava from Spain (￡7) and a brilliant way to kick off; followed by Billecart-Salmon Blanc de Blancs Champagne.
