I'm hosting Thanksgiving this year and I'm curious.

Answers:
Not true, there is quite a difference. However, in the United States you wouldn't be able to tell because they almost exclusively sell sweet potatos, but sometimes label them as yams.

An actual yam is from the genus Dioscorea and a Sweet Potato is from the genus Ipomoea Batatas. Yams grow mostly in Africa and Asia, while sweet potatos grow in North and South America.

If you bought it in the States, it's almost certainly a sweet potato, but people still use the word "yam" all the time.

Other Answers:
nothing....the same thing...

nadda, nuthin,no difference Yams are starchier and not a sweet as sweet potatoes. Yams are yellowish, SP's are orange.

SP's rock!

Sweet potato has yellow meat and is not quite as sweet as the orange meated yam. Other than the difference in the taste it is a personal preference. Most people think they are the same thing but, they are not.
