It is also aged in charred barrels to give it the smoky taste and the darker colour, it is not chemically coloured.
Like Scotch, Canadian Whisky and American Sourmash/Bourbon, they start out as a clear distilled spirit, the wood and aging along with the barrels having been charred, they put them over an intesely hot flame, then the woods resins and sugar caramelize and this adds the flavour and colour to the finished product.
jose cuervo normal that has been distilled an additional time, it makes for a much smoother alcohol

Jose Cuervo Black is the new tequila from Cuervo, they are marketing it to be mixed with coke, which to me sounds terrible (although there are actually cocktails already suggesting this tequila and coke such as charro negro and changirongo).
i read an interview of an executive of cuervo where he mentioned that it taste like Jack... my next question would have been then why don't I just buy Jack?
Anyway, if you like JD and you like Cuervo maybe you should try it and find out for yourself, but if this seems like a strange combination then just buy some good 100% blue agave tequila.
Jose cuervo black is there new line of tequila. Its aged in charred oak barrels just like bourbon is. the down side of this is you get a huge smokey aftertaste.. The tequila itself taste like burnt wood. Instead of silver, anejo, or resposado, you have black. As a bartender i would not recommend it for tequila drinkers out there. It is way to harsh and even when it is mixed with coke it still manages to carry its smokey flavor. Now if you like heavy bourbons and are thinking about trying tequila this is for you. Myself I will stick with patron platinum.
