Mike said: oh,no,you are wrong.I have found as below for this question(White or regular Merlot?),it will help you,my kids.
Some people say they hate merlot wine. Do you think it was because the saw the movie "Sideways"? I did notice the changes in some people who were a fan of that crappy flick.
Answer:
Serve them merlot and tell them it is shiraz. They won't know the difference if they say they hate merlot.
The only reason wineries are making white merlot is because they have too many merlot grapes. They did the same thing with their excess inventory of zinfandel back in the '70s.
Shiraz is the current "in" red wine, and they will be happy to think that is what they are drinking.
Nope. Merlot grape has a slightly odd woody taste... excellent in blends such as Cab/Merlot or Shiraz/Merlot, but I am also not a fan of 100% Merlots
Lol - I agree. All of a sudden people became Merlot Snobs overnight.
You can't beat a good Merlot in my opinion (unless it's a lovely peppery shiraz)
I definitely prefer White Merlot, and I've never seen Sideways. I just find most dry red wines entirely too cough syrupy. White Merlot is dry enough to not make my teeth hurt, yet sweet enough not to taste like Vicks 44D. And it goes well with all different kinds of dinners and appetizers. Personally, I prefer Ernest and Julio's Twin Valley.
white for me
The movie was great and white merlot is too sweet.
Of the two, I'd rather have regular Merlot. White Merlot is crap.
A good French Style Merlot is phenominal. Unfortunately, cheap wine producers have bastardized what the original grape tastes like so much that it's hard to get a complex Merlot here in the states.
It's a great wine to get started on because cheap Merlot is FAR better than cheap Cab, but there are really only 2 or 3 US Merlots that I would ever buy. Twomey is one of the best I've ever had and Raymond is not great, but far better than most other California & Chilean Merlots.
i actually do like both pinot noir and red merlot (not the white merlot that tastes like white zi). But they both have the same problem. Very good ones are hard to find. I print labels for a number of major top ten wineries in the world at I have noticed that since the movie Sideways came out, the Pinot Noir quantities that are being ordered have tripled, if not quadrupled in volume. And the clients usually tell me it is because of the movie.
I have a very hard time finding decent merlot or pinot on the market from pretty much anywhere. And I get frustrated with both so I generally buy other wines instead like sangiovese that are more reliable.
That said here are some ones that I find relatively decent.
Sterling Merlot
Provenance Merlot
Cambria Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard or Bench Break
King Estate Pinot Noir
