To answer this question consider another one: Who experiences more stress, your average American or your average Aussie? I would say your average American because the pace of life is so fast here. Everybody who is anybody is always trying to get ahead and striving to have a nice standard of living, which in many cases, is measured relative to your friends and peers. This answer really has no relation to your question except that beer drinking in America is associated with social drinking at clubs or bars or rednecks and alcoholics who drink anytime, anywhere.
