Because they have chocolate, as already mentioned, and therefore they appeal to many chocolate lovers (well, at least hte milk chocolate lovers). I used to really like them, esp. the peanut kind, but now I find milk chocolate way too sweet and am keeping a watch on my sugar intake. I prefer watching the jolly, animated M&M characters on TV these days instead.
You may want to consider posting this question in 'General - Food & Drink' for more answers...I am confused as to why this is in the Beer, Wine & Spirits section. Is there a drinking brand called M & M that I haven't heard of?

Because their chocolate. Almost every one likes chocolate. Did you know that they were made back before A/C so that Mars could sell chocolate in the summer. Back then no one sold chocolate in the summer because it would melt.
