Seriously, if you%26#039;re not actually living here I can see why you%26#039;d think that. But all those anti drinking messages are because we drink like MAD, and it leads to a lot of drunk driving and other assorted violent death (I blame the fact that cheap piss water is our most popular beer).

Americans drink all of the times. Alcoholism is when it affects your daily life, which happens to a lot of Americans because they constantly drink. Drunk driving is bad, hence MADD, it kills people. Of course they label some people alcoholics, as some people are and need help to stop. Drinking too much can give you alcohol poisoning and kill you. Anyhow. Americans drink all the time, since way before they turn 21 in most cases.

Not all Americans do. Some of us...myself included...fight to educate people about the benefits and the proper usage.
As far as why many of the others are so uptight about it...
America was founded by puritanistic immigrants that were kicked out of Europe for being to conservative. That puratinistic sense of governance has continued to be prevalent in out laws and thinking ever since. Even though many of our law makers are anything but pure...going to jail for bribery charges...getting busted for soliciting prostitutes...and asking undercover police for gay sex.
Anyway, if were founded by religious fundamentalists, what makes you think that their influence would still exist?
That and the media has learned that controversy sells. People don%26#039;t tune in when everything is great. So they like to create villains when ones don%26#039;t exist.
