My theory is that they have been used for special occasions where a large crowd is sure to drink up the wine.These massive glass containers in varying sizes are very impressive.They are difficult to carry,open and even more difficult to pour.Their sheer size,weight, and presence compared to "standard " 750 ml wine bottles are all reasons why they are named after powerful biblical Kings.
