I wake up around 3 or 4 and just lie there a couple hours. I finally doze off but usually right before the alarm goes off!

Answer:
It has something to do with the way it affects your blood sugar level...I have the same problem!
drink more wine
You're drinking too much before bed. Alcohol has a sedative effect on your body. When it wears off, you wake up and then you must fall into natural sleep. Then there's the dehydration and other body functions (pp) related to alcohol consumption.
Alcohol does put you into a deep sleep and, as the alcohol level goes down in your body, you catch up on REM sleep, have vivid dreams and wake feeling sweaty and restless.

It takes an hour, (more if you are female) for the liver to process a unit of alcohol, and so five units consumed up until 10pm would take five or more hours to go through the system, hence the tendency to wake in the early hours. Since the liver's way of getting rid of the waste products of alcohol is to flush them out in urine, sleep is also disturbed by the need to pee.
SWITCH TO HARD LIQUOR!
Sweaty and restless? Novices.

I often wake up after my liver has done its work and have trouble going back to sleep. But I also have the same issue if I haven't drank any alcohol, so I attribute this to being a habitual thing.

I have read conflicting reports on the affects of alcohol on sleep, and you could make a case for why it is good and why it is bad. I think the effects are fairly individualized. There is definately a sedating effect, and once this wears off, your body may think it is time to get up, despite what the clock says. Perhaps a non-alcoholic sedative, a glass of milk, nighttime tea or something similar would put you back to sleep.
Well, I read most of the answers, and some make sense. But here's a thought. Sometimes people drink a little and get drowsy earlier in the evening than they ordinarily would. So they go to bed a little earlier, and wake up earlier.

Maybe not the best answer, but it'll give you something to consider.
