my dad drinks he goes on binges from time to time but i was wondering why does a person drink something that is posion??? that robs a person of their brain cells??? im 19 and im not old enough to drink but even if i was i wouldnt! i wont ever drink ever!!!
Answer:
When people (both future alcoholics and nonalcoholics) first start drinking, they do so because they like the effect it produces. As we grow older, opportunities and occassions to continue to drink occur (depending on our circumstances). There the differences in our genetics play a role, some people favor the effect produced by alcohol more than others. These people have a genetic predisposition to potentially develop alcoholism. The key for this to happen is that the predisposed must continue to drink. With continued exposure to alcohol, changes in the brain chemistry occur, leading to a phenonema known only in real alcoholics - craving. Early on this craving is subtile, as the disease progresses the cravings become very real and all consuming.
Once the disease has "blossomed" the alcoholic drinks to alleviate the craving and the physical withdrawal. Alcoholism is not is matter of will power or emotional weakness - it's a powerful brain disease. The desire to drink is as powerful as the need for food or water.
In the resulting emotional turmoil that develops while under the influence of a powerful chemical, both the alcoholic and the nonalcoholics in their lives look for "reasons" or "excuses" why the alcoholic continues to drink in the light of all the damage that continuing to drink causes. Yet, all these "reasons" are not the true reason - the reason is that the alcoholic can NO LONGER NOT DRINK! For many people, a doctor's care or hospitalization to "detox" the person is necessary to break the cycle of addiction. Many others can "sweat it out" without medical help. Stopping drinking is but the beginning - the key is continuing to stay stopped. Most (but not all) people find the mutual aid from Alcoholics Anonymous helpful. Others seek profesional help on an outpatient basis. Some people find organized religion helpful. The key is finding something, anything to fill the void that has occurred when drinking ceases.
I encourage the questioner to seek out a local Al-Anon meeting and you'll see you're not alone. Although Al-Anon is to help you cope with your dad's disease, the folks there will know about the local resources available if and when your dad may be ready to quit.
Best wishes.
That's a good choice. You're either a women or never had a women.
who knows, drowning sorrow, building self esteem.. I think your on the right track by not wanting to drink..
i used to drink a lot. but i have stopped. it is an escape from reality. from pain. it is an addiction. my dad is semi-alcholic and it really saddens me to see him drink
You are a smart person. Also remember about smoking. Why do people inhale something into their lungs that makes them rot? I guess everyone could come up with something that they could ask why about. Everyone seems to have their own vices....some good and some not.
19 and never had a drink? I think I agree with rkmy78
That is a really good observation. I hope you can stick to it. I think people drink sometimes because they have a hard time coping with the pain they are going through. I drank tonight because I'm going through hell and I'm lonely. Sometimes when you have noone you need a drink to make you forget that fact. Maybe you should try being there for your dad to talk to. He's a person too and maybe needs a friend. I hope this helps.
To "get away" from their problems, to feel relaxed or estastic, to feel momentarily cheerful, to get into the mood for parties or informal events, peer pressure... Alcoholism... Many reasons to do so. Dreadful, dreadful.
Small amounts of red wine is actually fairly healthy. Lastly, health reasons... But that only applies for small amounts of wine.
Sometimes drinking also does good things.
Makes ugly people look better
Makes you feel better
Course if you are an alcoholic which is likely because your dad is, then you will react differently to it than other people that arent. It will make you pissed off and once you start drinking you cant stop until you are stinking drunk.
Believe it or not. Some people are able to have one drink and enjoy themselves.
Your problem though, your brain is wired for this kind of dependency. If its not alcohol that does it, something else will be there to fill in for it. Gambling, drugs, smoking, sex.. If your brain is wired for addiction its going to become addicted to something.
I was wondering the same let me know when you get a lagitimate answer.
GOOD FOR YOU!!! i wished I'd been smart as you . my daddy drank too. when I got older I would get smashed a couple a time a year. I would always regret it the later. It taste terrible makes a jerk , angry ,sad ore makes you think you are Gods gift to the opposite sex (and that's a whole different story) I never seen anything good come from it. when I did it I thought I was cool (tell I seen the videos years later)
people drink sometimes as a form of therapy or to just have a good time. the ones who do it as a form of therapy can't seem to find anything else that can relieve their everyday stress. the ones that do it to have a good time, can't seem to have a good time sober. we could outlaw drinking but it just won't work as we have learned in the past. too many people enjoy "taking the edge off" with alcohol. therefore, it wouldn't be a worldwide problem if everyone knew how to control their drinking and knew their body enough to know when they've had enough. unfortunately, that's not the case. also, it should be noted that red wine is the only form of alcohol that is actually considered good for you(heart), but once again, not in excess. good luck staying clear of liquor, but your real test will come on your 21st birthday.
I drink because I enjoy drinking. I am not an alcoholic, but i do enjoy drinking. MY dad is an alcoholic, and i will NEVER become and alcoholic. I don't hate all people who drink just because my dad is an alcoholic. If a responsible person wants to drink then fine! But when alcohol is put into irresponsible hands, then that's when it becomes a problem. Alcohol is not poison when done in moderation. ONLY when done in extreme excess.I drink pretty regularly and I am a VERY intelligent person with an IQ of 130.Yes it kills alot of brain cells when done in excess. BUT anything in excess (ANYTHING) can hurt you.It is a good choice on your part not to drink by the way.
Binge drinking is a type of alcholism. Your father is an alchoholic. I applaud you for abstaining. Why? Cause you don't need to be drunk to have fun and it causes lots of problems for the one's that not only love them but for the one's they love! Brain cells are plentiful but the stupidity is not worth the ( You fill in he blanks) you have seen what alcohol does to people. So stick to your guns!!!
So using the F word makes you better.
i enjoy drinking, and i drank at 19..and i wasnt old enough to drink.
i say i will have to agree with rkmy78 also.
I think it is ok for people to drink once in a while. I very rarely drink alot but I do enjoy a glass of wine every once in while. A person needs to be able to control themselves and the amount they drink. Many people are responsible enough to to do that.
