Answers:
A lot of the food was steamed in banana leaves, kind of like how Wounded said. I dont think they buried to much of their food in the "imu" or pit. Vegetables and starches were steamed. Fish and potiens roasted, steamed, and salted.

Other Answers:
Maybe they dug holes on the beach, made a wood fire down in it, wrapped their food in banana leaves and buried it...then dug it up later?? but probably left some air holes for the fire to breathe?? :0)or on a open pit fire ;0)
