You cook bratwurst with Richard Simmons... or in lieu of that, any other open flame. I like to chop up bratwurst and put it in a skillet with fresh grated potatoes and onions. In fact... that's what I'm cooking now!
Most bratwurst is already fully cooked, so like other sausages of this type you can warm it up by microwave, boiling in water, or prepare it anyother way you like. My self, I prefer to bake at 350F for an hour or so to brown it up, and let it skin crisp up. Occasionally I'll broil it, and sometimes I'll throw it on the BBQ. In all cases, I'll poke it several times with a fork to allow the juices to flow out, only because that'll remove some of the salt.
Other favorite things to do with it... add to macaroni salads, macaroni and cheese, baked beans... just about anything. Hope this is what you're looking for, and enjoy.
For regular flavored fresh bratwurst place bratwurst in a pot and fully cover them with water or beer, bring water or beer to a boil, turn down heat and simmer for 15 minutes. At this point brats are fully cooked so just brown the brats on the grill, under the broiler or in a frying pan.
Apple bratwurst should be simmered in apple juice or cider. Cherry bratwurst are best simmered in beer.
