Answers:
Onions produce the chemical irritant known as syn-propanethial-S-oxide. This gas is also known as the Lachrymatory Factor (‘crying factor'). It stimulates the eyes' lachrymal glands so they release tears. This gas is instable and can react with water which results in, among others, sulphuric acid. When this happens in the eye, the eyes start to neutralize the acid by producing large amounts of water, and thus make us cry.

Cooling your onion before cutting can help...or cutting them when wet...or even under cool running water. Most of the irritant is found in the thin lining between the layers of onion so the least contact with that helps too.

Some kinds of onions do not have as much of the enzymes and gasses but your flavor is different with these types also.

Another less successful remedy is to chew crackers or bread while your chopping....not sure why this helps.

Cold water or refrigerated onions work best for me. Just remember not to take a deep breath when you first slice. Good Luck!

Other Answers:
wear sunglasses the oil gets in your eyes when you cut them
a very very sharp knife
cut off the ends and soak it in cold water for a minute or two also, sweet onions like vidalia or red onions do not cause as much irritation as the regular yellow.
Place them inside a dish with water. The oils from the onion are not powerful enough to penetrate through the H2O.
My mom always said to slice them under cold running water...be careful not to cut yourself, but it works like a charm!
I heard of putting them in cold water but never tried.
this works it may sound and look stupid but here it is hold a piece of bread in your mouth it absorbs the fumes.
cut them in a pot of water
An old tale says chew on a the stick end of a match. I think maybe the Ronco slicer dicer thing might be better.
For just slicing, I have found that cutting them under water or under running water works best. Keeps the fumes (which contain an oil) out of the eyes. For chopping them, I set a small fan next to the chopping board and make sure it is blowing away from my face.
Do it under runnung water
Use a GE Food Processor/Grinder.
Well make sure you store your onion in the fridge before cutting, that way when you cut the onion your nose won't catch the onion's vapour which made eye irritated.

Or try this it worked for me, when cutting onion place a cup of sodium chloride beside you..your eye will not get irritated anymore.
A sliced onion releases a substance that reacts with the fluid in your eyes to form sulfuric acid. the eyes protect themselves from the acid by tearing, which rids them of the irritant. Here are ways to prevent tearing:

Wear solid plastic goggles
Cut off the root end of the onion last
Freeze the onion for 10 minutes, or refrigerate it for 1 hour before slicing.
Ball up a piece of white bread and impale it on the tip of the knife to absorb the fumes.
Chewing gum while you chop onions may also help.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

There have been many questions on this.

1. cut the head and tail of the onion without breathing.
2. Rinse your knife with cold runnin water and cut right in the center without breathing.
3. For each 3 cut, rinse knife with cold running water (you can put a bowl full of water and dip the knife in there).
4. If you are chopping onion, after you cut in quarters, you can put the onion in the food processor.

The above procedure works for me. I don't breath while cutting and taking the onion from the food processor.

Furthermore, you can try putting the onion in salt water after cutting the head and tail and soak for a while (around 5 minutes)
soak the onion in cold water and if that doesnt work dont hold your eyes open the whole time you cut the onion. Shut them if it gets bad.
Hold a wooden match in yoru teeth, w/ the strike end out. It cuts the fumes.

And cut the root end last of all. It's where most of the tear-jerking comes from.
run it under cold water
dndaughtery,

Eat a bit of lemon and your eyes will not tear even if you work with hundreds of onions.

I know that this sounds silly, but when I was in military boot camp, I worked in the mess hall one day. One of the cooks told me to peel onions - hundreds of them. When my eyes began to tear, the cook gave me a slice of lemon and told me if I ate it, then my eyes would not tear from the onions.

It worked! It stopped my eyes from tearing from the onions that I had already peeled and kept my eyes from tearing as I peeled the remainder.

God bless.
