Jim, the cheapest and easiest way to make any kind of gravy is this:
put about a 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan and let it get hot. Then add about one teaspoon and 1/2 of flour. whisk the flour in the hot oil until it gets brown but don't let it burn. then little by little add about half a cup of water. If you see you need more water then add more water and whisk it. Then you add your spices. I add some salt, onion powder, and pepper. Then you add a can of mushrooms into the gravy and cook but keep an eye on it because the gravy may get thick and you will need to add more water. Ok now if you need white gravy more like ckicken fried steak instead of using water, you use milk or cream. simple and easy and delicious.I don't have the exact measurements, I am just guessing because I learned this from mom. This recipe is for like 3 people. If you need to make a large amount of gravy you need to increase the amounts but don't put too much oil because then you will need alot of flour. The amount of flour is the ingrediant that will give you the amount of gravy. Just do a test run and see. good luck

The best pepper sauce.
Get a shallow frying pan hot with some brandy in and some cracked black pepper, the more pepper you add the hotter the sauce, and just gently tip it to light the brandy.
Let it flame burn out and add some double cream, stir it in.
Reduce until the correct consistency required, add a little browning if reqd. I dont add this, but it looks better.
Finally add a little knob of butter, this gives it a shiny glaze. reduce again if regd. Pour over your steak, serve with fried mushroom and onions mixed with fresh fries.
