if you have the eclectic model. freeze the bowl overnight before you use it. that's what i do to fix that problem.

If it is one that uses ice, are you sure you put the correct amount of salt in the ice, and did you use rock salt, not table salt?
If it is one that you put a tub in the freezer, are you sure your freezer is 0 degrees and that the tub was in long enough?
Make sure you followed the ice cream recipe correctly first of all...then did you use rock salt over the ice to help lower the temp of the ice? The mixture must get cold enough and stay cold enough for a long enough period of time to help solidify the ice cream...also this type of ice cream rarely gets rock hard like that you buy in the tub at the grocery store...it is more of a soft whipped consistancy when done...Also the electric mixers today rarely work as well as the hand crank ice cream freezers we used back in the 60's and 70's!
