I put it in the crock pot and put seasonings, potatoes and bacon in there and cooked it on high for 4 hours. It was as hard as a rock, I have made it in an oven and has turned out well.. Most meats I cook in a crock pot turn out so tender that you can flake it with a fork. Anyone have an idea what went wrong? I am just learning to cook with deer meat. I have made some things with it already and they have always turned out well.

The most important thing about deer meat is to marinade for a LONG time before cooking. On those larger chunks of meat especially. This will make the meat more tender and less %26quot;gamey%26quot; tasting. I typically marinate for at least two days. Also, it sounds like it needed more liquid and a longer cook time. If you would have cooked it longer, and kept moist it should have turned out better.

sinced there is no way to tell how old the deer was at the time of its demise, you may have gotten an older tougher cut of meat. I personally do not like cooking in the crock pot on high because it changes (for me) how a crockpot works. 8-10 hours might have yielded a killer fork tender roast. I like to slow cook meats that I am not sure of. If the meat was rubbery, then it was from an older animal and needed more cooking to break down the meat fibers. Those cuts of meat have great flavor but need patient cooking.
what Charcoal Rules said about not peeking is so true for crockpot cooking. My manual that came with my latest crockpot says each time you take the lid off adds anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour to the cooking time.

it could have been the cut of meat. It could have been not enough liquid in the crock pot. It could have been cooked too long. Sorry, those are just some of the reasons.

You need to cook it quite a bit longer in the crock pot, with plenty of moisture and leave the cover on. Stop peaking.

It will be fine. A little coffee is good moisture for venison.

Well, I have a friend who was cooking deer meat. And HE FORGOT it in the oven, whenever it came out it was the most tender, TASTY thing ever.

Cook it longer. :o?!

Without knowing the cut it sounds like you have undercooked it, if it was rump.
