The process that is used to refine the sugar substitutes can include caustic substances. For instance, the process of making sugar into Splenda uses chlorine. Sugar is all natural. I think they're safe in moderation.
Other Answers:
I was told the same, cant remember what they called it, but it scared the crap outta me
Some people should not use sugar substitutes for health reasons. For most people, they are perfectly safe if used in moderation. I have checked with my doctor, and he recommended using Splenda instead of the other available substitute sweeteners. If you are uncertain as to whether you should use them and what type you should use, check with your doctor.
yes it gives u temporary slimming
but whn u leave it u tend to put on more and more weight and ure bones start paining. i knw someone whos has suffered frm this. so plse avoid it.
Most of the sweeteners contain something that could possibly give you cancer. Nowadays, EVERYTHING can give you cancer, so within moderation, you should be fine.
Splenda is the only real accepted sweetener as it is made from actual sugar. It is approved by the AMA for diabetics. Saccharin came along in the 70's; they howled cancer but nobody seemed to die. It is chemical, however, and I think chemicals are bad for the body. The worst is sweetener that contains Phenalynaline. Reagan got it passed during his term through the FDA. It should have never happened. It is a neurotoxin, so sayeth a prominent neuro-surgeon in Beverly Hills. It breaks down into FORMALDAHYDE upon consumption. Read the packets. I just buy the Splenda.

They are ARTIFICIAL sweeteners. That one word should tell you all you need to know. These are not substances found in nature. With every new sugar substitute introduced into the market, about five years later the medical studies start showing all kinds of health problems that arise from them.
White refined sugar is no better, of course. High fructuse corn syrups are horrible too. The ideal is to get used to not sweetening your food. Next best thing is to use a little bit of good natural honey that is locally grown, it not only sweetens things up but helps you with hay fever. You can also use the natural sweetness of fruits and some vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes) to add a sweet ingredient to your food. For best nutritional value, just try to use the whole fruit and not overdo on fruit juices.
sugar sustitutes give me terrible headaches. I never use 'em.
