I've heard that teflon pans release toxic chemicals when heated to normal temperatures... Is this true?

Answers:
Teflon pans release chemicals, fumes and particulate matter when heated. Dupont claims that the fumes and particulate matter are not toxic to humans at "normal" temperatures. It does warn about possible flu-like symptoms. Other organizations such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG) fiercely argue the safety of Teflon, and note that pans release these chemicals at normal cooking temperatures.

EWG says that scientists have shown that particulate matter is released from Teflon pans at temperatures as low as 400-500 degrees Fahrenheit and toxic fumes and chemicals are released at between 6-700 degrees F. As a previous user said,
Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), is used to make Teflon. The chemical is found in the bloodstream of 90-95% of people as well as animals as remote as polar bears, but its not clear exactly where it comes from. EPA designated PFOA a likely carcinogen.

A civil lawsuit in West Virginia awarded $107.6 million to plaintiffs in a suit brought against the company for allowing PFOA run-off to pollute a water supply for 60,000 people. Dupont recently settled a federal suit with the EPA for 16.5 million dollars for not submitting toxicity data to the EPA. It is thought that Zonyl, another PFOA product made by Dupont, can be broken down to PFOA in the body. Zonyl is used to make food containers, textiles, cables, rugs, floor cleaners - thousands of products used everyday. PFOA is found in the blood of 90-95% of humans and blood bank blood. As mentioned before the exact path that it enters the body can only be speculated.

Other Answers:
Teflon first of all is a registered trade mark from dupont for a synthetic resin. There are other companies that make the same but with different names. It has many applications as plumbing industry, wire industry and many others. The one that you are talking about is for the food industry and it is special for that and won′t give you any problem just if the brand of the pan says that is made from it. There are many chinese pans that I′m not pretty sure they have the quality that we are talking about, but if it comes from a good brand I don′t think you have anything to worry about.

Parrots and non-stick coated pans are not compatible, which makes me extremely uncomfortable. From what I understand it's a real problem if you leave the pan heating on the stove with nothing in it, leading me to believe it is safe otherwise; I prefer an all-clad set to avoid the situation all together. Teflon is safe unless it is scratched then the flakes can come off in your food. The most dangerous part of teflon is the by-product created by the manufacturing of it( commonly called C-8) They are doing studies in our area right now about it's affects because they cantaminated our water with it for the last ten to fifteen years. If I find out anything on it I'll post it
