this site has lots of great advise:

Shake one hand loose so that it is completely relaxed. With your other hand, touch the soft fleshy part of your relaxed hand at the base of your thumb. This soft texture is similar to the texture of a blue rare to rare steak. Now touch your thumb and forefinger together and again touch the base of your thumb. This texture is similar to a medium-rare steak.

Other Answers:
You really should get a meat thermometer, cause there's no way to gauge the temperature. With a thermometer the center of the cut should be 150 degrees for a medium steak.

Ya gotta learn to poke it. You need to poke it and find it slightly firm. Practice makes perfect.

Oh I forgot to add when you do you'll be a hit at BBQs (till it gets old)

4 to 5 mins both sides mid heat I agree with Poutine. You have to learn the *feel* of a steak and she's given great advice.

Are you talking charcoal or cheater propane?

On charcoal, it's about 9 min on each side, with the coles good and white.

I know this, because I just had a nice med/rare steak the other day, and I cooked it about 7-8 min each side.
