i always measure from the bottomup to the brim is this the right way as i never seem to have the right size

Answers:
hi! you need to measure the base of the tin! if it is circle the measurement will be the diameter (the length of the base) and a square/rectangular tin uses length and breadth! hope this helps!!

Other Answers:
From side to side - north to south AND east to west (or vice versa)

if its a round tin, its diameter, ie., 9" pie/cake pan = 9" wide. For a square pan, its Length x Width ie, 9" Wide x 12" Long. That only gives you the height of the pan. You need to use a ruler and measure across the middle of the pan. That tells you if it is an 8 inch, 9 inch, etc. For square pans, you measure across the top of each side.

straight acroos the middle of it, in a straight line.

you measure across the top at the farthest distance to give you the diameter of the tin

Yeah that's how you would measure but most recipes say to allow an extra couple of centimetres on top of this for the cake to rise etc. It's diameter is what you are lookingfor, side to side :)

TO MEASURE THE BAKING TIN, LAY BAKING TIN UPSIDE DOWN, STRETCH MEASURING TAPE FROM ONE SIDE TO THE OTHER MAKING SURE TAPE IS IN THE MIDLE OF THE TIN.

Use a tape measure accross the bottom of pan. Use cups of water to measure capacity. (throw water away).
