Answers:
i learned this trick from my grandma, take a strand of spaghetti from the pot you are cooking and throw it on a vertical Wall. if it sticks on the wall then it is ready, if it falls let it boil for a few more minutes and repeat.

Other Answers:
You can take a piece and throw it against the wall. If it sticks then it's done.

Taste a small bite, you'll know.

My cat when it's 'al dente' - it's got a tender springy 'bite' not too soft nor 'hard'. taste it, you will know!

Taste a piece!!

take one strip, throw it against the wall, if it sticks then its ready. if it falls down, be patiant nd nd keep throwing against the wall.

throw it into the wall..if it sticks, its done... Ready for what?

When it is being served for you on the table.

take a strand and cut it in two with your fingernail.
If there is a small pinsized white core it is al denté.
If you want it a little softer cook a minute more test again. Taste a piece. Keep in mind that it will still cook a little in the remaining heat after you drain it, so the piece you taste should actually be a little firmer than you want.

"Al dente" means that it offers some resistance "to the teeth" when you bite into it. Takes some practice to achieve this level of doneness consistently, but your best bet for this is to start with Barilla brand pasta and follow the (slightly different) instructions on the Barilla box.

The business about sticking to the wall works because the starch on the surface of the pasta has become sticky. Thus, the sauce will also stick to the noodles.
