1 1/2 sticks butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
1 egg + 1 egg yolk
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup + 2 tbs. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Bitter- or Semisweet chocolate chips (to taste, i usually use about 1/2 pkg.)
I got this recipe from Cook's Magazine, so if there are any problems refer to their website.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and melt butter in a microwave until about 1/2 melted (or fully melted, it doesn't matter). Put into mixer with both sugars. Mix until blended. Add egg and vanilla, and mix as well. Add flour, baking soda, and salt, and mix slowly to prevent spilling until mosly mixed, then you can up the speed if you wish. Add chips to taste and mix. Spoon about 1/4 cup dough balls onto a parchment paper-topped cookie sheet, and bake until golden brown (I think about 15 minutes, may be different)

The wedb is full of recipes from easy to complicated. Just decide what kind you want, type into search and pick from the ones that pop up. Use a quality cookie sheet, one that is flat and heavy. A thin one will burn the bottoms.
Find a great recipe and follow it. When you taste a cookie that you like, ask the baker for the recipe.
