I was born and raised in the south. I remember growing up when my mom would sometimes make cornbread as the main course for supper! My dad loved cornbread and milk. I don't know about cracker barrell cornbread but I'll share my recipe my late mother handed down to me.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Grease a cast iron skillet and sprinkle a coating of all purpose corn meal on it. This will become the crust. Shake off the excess over the garbage. Put it in the oven for about 5 mintues or so after the oven has heated to 450.

In mixing bowl combine:
1 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup all-purpose corn-meal
1 Tablespoon baking powder
2 Tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon salt

In another bowl, combine
1 egg
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup melted butter
Mix well. Add to dry ingredients and mix well, but you don't have to use a mixer. I've always used a spoon. Pour the mixture into the cast iron skillet and cook for 25 minutes.

I've never saw my mom use anything but a cast iron skillet and I would never use anything else either. Putting the skillet in the oven for 5 minutes cooks the crust and insures the cornbread comes out in one piece. I don't make cornbread as much as my mom did but whenever I do, there is never any left over.
