I think the smell would relate to how fresh the poo was. If it was a really fresh one, then it would probably smell, if it was already dried up then probably not.
Poo is a source of fuel and the fire service do say NEVER put fuel on the barbecue other than whats supposed to be there... so before you embark on such an experiment, check with the fire service to see if its safe.
