3 c. ground cooked lamb

4 tbsp. butter
1 1/2 c. gravy
1/4 tsp. pepper
Saute onion in 1 tablespoon butter until soft, but not brown. Remove from heat; mix in meat, gravy, pepper and Worcestershire sauce, and 3/4 teaspoon salt. Beat until fluffy potatoes, remaining salt, and butter, pepper, and hot milk. Put meat mixture in 1 1/2 quart baking dish. Top with fluffy potatoes, score with fork to make a pattern. Brush with egg. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.
Other Answers:
Ground LAMB, not beef, cheese and mashed potatoes, with chopped onions. Note that with beef it is properly called Cottage Pie.
Lamb on the bottom, melt some cheese on top, put a layer of corn and then a layer of potato. You can even mix the cheese with potato.

I love making Shepherd's pie. Try epicurious.com for some great recipes.
I make mine as follows:
Ground Lamb (about 3 pounds)
Saute garlic (about 5-6 cloves),chopped onions (2 small cooking onions), and fresh mushrooms (I use Bella and Shitake) in olive oil until softened. Add lamb and cook over medium low heat until lamb is done (brown). Add 1 can crushed tomatoes, Buffalo Wing Sauce (to taste), Frank's Hot Sauce (to taste) and Cayenne Pepper (to taste). Gently simmer.
At the same time, peel and then boil potatoes. I like Yukon Gold. Drain water. Mash potatoes with Fat Free Chicken Broth (about 4 ounces) and Fat Free Sour Cream (1 small container). Mashed potatoes should form a stiff peak and not be mushy. Combine grated Asiago cheese (to taste) to the mashed potatoes and stir to mix in.
In a casserole, mound potatoes around the outside of the dish leaving a well in the center.
Drain the meat mixture so there is no liquid (grease). Place meat mixture in center of dish. Top with grated cheese (I use Fat Free mix -- usually Monteray Jack and Cheddar).
Place covered (use aluminum foil) dish in preheated 375 oven for about 25 minutes or until everything is warmed through. Remove aluminum foil and turn on broiler for about 3-4 minutes until peak of potatoes brown slightly.
I serve this spicy dish with a vegetable, such as Asparagus or mustard-glazed carrots.
hunt down a sheep. bake it into a pie. don't get caught by the shepheard nor his dog.
Shepherd's Pie Irish Lamb
Ingredients:
1 lg. egg
1/4 c. flour
3/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper
1 1/2 lbs. lean, boneless lamb
shoulder, cut into 1 inch cubes
1 tbsp. olive oil
1/4 c. half & half, warmed
1/4 c. water
1 1/2 lbs. potatoes
1/4 lb. mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (12 oz.) can ale or beer
2 med. carrots, peeled & sliced
1/2 c. white cheddar cheese, grated
1 (10 oz.) pkg. frozen green peas
1/4 tsp. rosemary
1 lg. onion, sliced
Directions:
In plastic bag, combine flour, salt and pepper. Add lamb cubes, half at a time, and shake. In heavy 4 quart saucepan or Dutch oven, heat oil. Saute lamb half at a time until browned. Reserve remaining flour mixture. Remove lamb cubes as they are browned to platter. Add mushrooms, onion and garlic; saute until golden. Return lamb and its juices to saucepan. Add ale, carrots and rosemary. Heat to boiling over medium heat; reduce heat to low and cook, covered, about 30 minutes. Check occasionally to see that there is enough liquid. Meanwhile, peel and quarter potatoes. In 3 quart saucepan, cover potatoes with water. Heat to boiling over high heat; reduce heat to medium. Cook until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Drain potatoes very well; return to saucepan. With electric mixer, beat potatoes until well broken up. Gradually beat in half and half and egg until mixture is smooth. Fold in cheese; keep warm. When lamb has cooked about 30 minutes, add peas; cover and cook 10 minutes longer. Stir reserved flour mixture into water and stir into stew. Cook until thickened. Heat oven to 425 degrees. Turn lamb mixture into shallow 2 quart baking dish. Spoon potatoes into large pastry bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe potatoes over top of lamb. Bake until potatoes are golden, about 15 to 20 minutes.
