can any one tell me how to use american measurements..for example " one cup of flour " , is this one tea cup, or a precise measurement , I have also seen a recipe for "one cup of beans" .surely a cup of beans is heavier than a cup of flour..

Answer:
Go buy some measuring cups in Asda or just about any store. they come in sets as 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup and 1/4 cup (while you're there, buy a set of measuring spoons too!) AND make sure you use a glass measure cup for liquid items. Follow the measuring directions as written and you shouldn't have too much trouble.

If you want to share more about what kind of recipe you're looking at we may be better able to give a more indepth answer.

Yes, if measured by weight, one cup of beans is heavier than one cup of flour.

Cheers
USA 1 cup is 229 grams, is 16 tablespoons, is 8 ounces.

Approximate US/Canadian 1 cup flour is English 4oz is French 120 grams.
Aha, so American cuisine does consist of more than hot dogs! An American cup, for purposes of cooking, is eight fluid ounces, not eight ounces of weight. Therefore, the difference in weight between a cup of flour and a cup of beans is not relevant. Have fun with your cooking.
Cup is a dry measurement. The weight will not be the same. Otherwise the recipe would say by the ounce or pound. Our recipes if it is by the cup it is considered dry measurement even if it is a wet ingredient. ( I know that sounds crazy).

If it is by weight it will call for 8 ounces. Which would be a cup, but only in liquid form. If it is something like a meat, the recipe will call for 8 oz or a pound, not a cup.

I hope that makes sense, I am also trying to watch the highlights of the final goals leading to Derby going to the top... Woohoo, thank heavens for video.
