I lived in Germany for years and have tried making them from hand once for fun but them I decided to stick with what most German's do. Buy it in a box. I have also lived all over the US and have never been in a region that doesn't have a market that stocks it. It is almost impossible to get that real German taste and texture by doing it from hand. This comes from a guy that would rather spend 3 hours normally doing something by hand than resort to a box of anything.
