Here are some friends with simlar question as we.And I have this question for many days,anyone help us?

My friend claims it smells that way to her (rancid). I've never tried it, but she asked me to find out.

Your friend might have had a dish in which the fish was fried or cooked in rancid butter (hence that taste of b.a.).

Nuoc Mam is a concentrated fish sauce that has been prepared from fermented anchovies and salt. Ingredients like rice vinegar, water, garlic and fresh chili peppers are added. A few friends rave about it; I had it once (actually only took a few bites) but wasn't thrilled with it (guess, I'm not used to it, though I love Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Indian).

Hey, i just came back from there. Your freind is right...it smells like sh*t.Look up "Mui Ne" its a fishing village where most of Vietnams fish sauce is made. you might get some thing there
