Answer:
Yes the fries are an invention of Belgium. It was a poor mans food that goes back to the second half of the 17 centuries where in the winter people started to fry potato pieces.
You will find in the second link a recipe how to make real Belgium fries
pomme frites.
served with mayo.
what about them?
Hell's yes. Get some on the central square there in Brussels, along with a bucket of Mussels (which is the specialty of Brussels).
Are the tasiest in the world. You get them, in restaurants even for breakfast. And the mayo sauce is wonderful.
Dan.
Alas, 'tis true. They were invented in Belgium. But "Belgian fries" just lack the catchy alliteration required to become an icon.
Belgium's a little underrated anyway. If you ever go, try their beer. It's incredible!
I guess they wouldnt be called FRENCH fries,
i've been told they fry them twice.
That's where they came from.
Yep, they were invented in Belgium but the French served them in restaurants (in France) to foreigners and so they came known to the world as french fries.
We don't mind that they call their "frites" french fries, we call them pommes frites (french) or frieten (dutch) and it's still something else than the "french frites".
Tastes good with Belgian Mayo.
As you have in the US everywhere hamburgers and hot dogs, in Belgium you find everywhere a "frietkot" (where they sell frites). You sell hamburgers with frites. We do the opposite, we sell frites with hamburgers or fish sticks, ... (a lot of choices with a lot of different sauces).
If you come to Belgium, try the "frietkot" much cheaper than McDonald's and bigger portions.
Belgian Fries are worldwide known as French Fries and they must be one of the most popular foods.
