I am about to go to a Sushi restaurant and I want to know what is good, alot of my friends say, california rolls, but what else is good?

Answer:
Personally I don't like California rolls but only because they're not really authentic sushi. It's really a personal taste, but for a beginner they're pretty safe.

A lot of places do have cooked sushi if you're not feeling very adventurous. Again, I don't recommend them but you're the one that needs to be eating them.

Sushi really comes in two forms (four if you want to be specific, but we'll only focus on two of them). The first is the "maki" roll. This is the one that has seaweed on the outside, and the rice & fish on the inside. For the beginner I suggest the tuna roll (tekka maki).

The next is nigri sushi or the one where the raw fish is placed over a ball of rice. Again, like the rolled variety, I suggest trying the regular tuna if you're unsure of what to get.

Other things that you might enjoy:

salmon (sake)
shrimp (ebi)
yellowtail tuna (bincho or sometimes called bincho toro)
medium fatty tuna (chuu toro - this one is very tasty but a little pricey).
fatty tuna (Ootoro - this one is nicer than the chuu toro but also a lot more expensive)
crab (kani)

Enjoy.
I wouldn't know what other restaurants serve, but their menus are usually pretty descriptive. Salmon and Tuna are usually pretty popular, so check and see if rolls have these with other combinations of fish or vegetables. Shashimi (sp) is a type of sushi where a slice of fish tops a simple ball of rice. There are also flashfried rolls at many restaurants if you're not keen on raw fish. California rolls are excellent, especially if you're a little on the cautious side.eel, calamari and octopus are for the more daring. When you go, feel free to ask the waiter/waitress for more details on whats inside certain rolls, otherwise just pick some with fish and veggies you like.
If you are new to sushi and not ready to try raw fish, then there are a number of varieties that are generally cooked. The eel (sea or fresh water) is generally broiled and is excellent. Shrimp sushi is also generally boiled. Soft-shell crab tempura rolls also are common and use deep-fried crab. Fresh salmon and smoked salmon are not cooked but are cured, so less "challenging" to newcomers.
If you want to try raw fish, a good bet is to start with tuna or yellowtail. These are very mild and real crowd-pleasers. My personal favorites are tuna, salmon, eel and yellowtail. If you are more adventurous try mackerel, uni (sea urchin), octopus and various fish roe (such as flying fish). These have stronger flavors or more challenging textures.
Well California rolls are really good but I would be more daring. Try the salmon (my personal favorite) or some other raw fish. Octopus really doesn't taste nasty at all..just a bit chewy. If you don't like it then at least you'll know. Rolls with tempura are always good. Sashimi is not served with rice. It is just thinly sliced raw seafood and it is served with a dipping sauce, wasabi and ginger.
that is a good start and then try others
It would depend on the restaurant.
I usually like the specialty Makis (rolls). Nowadays every restaurant is doing a pretty good job improving their rolls and coming up with specialties. My suggestion would be to go for those and try a couple. Look at the ingredients though in case there is something you don't like
Let the itamae-san (sushi chef) know it is your first time and ask for his/her recommendation. Don't be afraid to let them know what you like and don't like. He/she will prepare something special just for you that you will enjoy. This assures the chef you will have a memorable experience and guarantees your return.
