I love gyros too, as I am Greek!
People always want to find new recipes! Gyros is a combination of many things and easy to make!
Word is they were first served in Nova Scotia (where they would be called donairs) by enterprising Greek immigrants.
Gyros is the Greek name for the Turkish kebab DONER. "Doner" in Turkish means "turns" or "turning". Original doner kebab should be made from beef or veal, not lamb. Nowadays they make chicken doner and fish doner as well. In Cyprus, Turkish Cypriots serve doner in oval pittas and add green salad in it, not cacik, like the Greeks do. I tried doner in England made from mutton and it tasted awful.
A word “gyros” means a full turn and the verb “gyrizo” means “to rotate”. (Turkish d?ner, Arabic shawarma, and Mexican tacos al pastor are very similar)
The upright spit stacked with thin slices of pork, beef or chicken that rotates slowly in front of the electric bars or, in rare cases, coals. The heat melts the fat, which drips from the bottom end of the spit, and the fat cone of meat becomes nicely brown and crunchy as it turns
You cut thin strips off the cooked outer surface of the gyros and put in pitta bread .Add yogurt, tomato slices, onion you like.
