When I order it from my favorite Vietnamese restaurant, it comes with a bunch of vegetables on the side. What do I do with the leaves thingy? Do people place the sauces inside the broth or dip?

Answer:
Rip up the leaves ('holy basil') and throw them into the broth. Add the raw veggies (beansprouts usually), and feel free to use the sauces either as a dip or to add to the broth. Use chopsticks in one hand (right, usually) to pull noodles and whatever into your mouth, and sup the broth from a spoon in the other hand...

Above all.... enjoy your Ph?! (and pronounce it "fa-uh?" if you want to make the cute Vietnamese waitress smile...)
Hi! I'm vietnamese and I know alot about Pho. Well, the leaves you drop them into your Pho. The sauce you squirt into the broth. If there is lime, squeeze it into your Pho and stir it. If you have little meats then you take a small bowl and sqeeze the sauces into it and take the meats and dip it in the sauce. That's how you eat Pho!
well, ya chew it and then you swallow...just joking, i like to wrap it around diced sausage and drop sweet and sour on it, that or green tobasco sauce, a dab'll do it. a little seasoning is good, but too much is well, too much.
I a big Pho fan, I like to add the Thai basil and cilantro, if you get the Vietnamese it is headier, fish sauce, lime juice and white pepper, I some times do or don't use the onion or the bean sprouts, the places I go they serve a few chilis on the side to, but I prefer the Hot sauce, not sriracha but the ground chili in oil.

I like the rare beef, but will also get the one with brisket and tendon, and have had the one with beef rolls or meatballs.

Try as many as possible, I started enjoying the Vietnamese food in Chinatown of Toronto Ontario Canada back in 1979, back then there were only 2 or 3, now there are 6 or 7 and a the Ban shops were you get the Vietnamese sandwiches is alway on my list to, we have 2 place here in Brantford On and a Thai place, so I can get my fix here now.
Trust me on this one . Do NOT put any of those things into the bowl. They only ruin the aromatic and flavorful broth. I have nothing but disdain for those who immediately dump the whole saucer of bean sprouts, basils, whatever and squirt the sauces into the bowl. These people don't know how to appreciate the ph?. It takes a lot of expertise, time and work to come up with the broth and these dummies ruin it in a second. Sight! When they bring out your bowl, just place your place above it and breath in the aroma and then slowly slurp a spoon of broth before getting to the meat and the noodles last. When nearly finishing, you can squeeze in a few drops of lime juice and if preferred, a little hot chili pepper. Appreciate and enjoy!
