My father was in Italy for a while, all the restaurants had this really hard outside and soft bread inside. Does anyone know what this bread is called or where to find it?

Answers:
ITALIAN BREAD

2/3 cup water
3/4 teaspoon salt
2/3 teaspoon sugar
2 cups bread flour
1 1/2 teaspoons yeast
1 teaspoon olive oil (optional)

Put all ingredients into bread machine or follow your user's manual. Select correct bread cycle and medium crust color, then press start.

Sounds like a baguette.

It's called Italian Bread here. I've seen in the grocery store and at Trader Joe's. It does sound to me like you are desribing french bread. However there are many varieties. best advice is to go to a good bakery ask for the person with the most experience and ask them. Some bakeries even offer samples so you can try them to find the right one.

This bread sounds like ciabatta (cha-batta) to me. It's really good and pretty simple to make. Check the net for recipes.
