Mike said: oh,no,you are wrong.I have found as below for this question(Looking for a basic recipe to make yogurt from milk without using a starter?),it will help you,my kids.
Answers:
Seconding that you can't. You need to use either yogurt as a starter with live active cultures, or a culture powder that provides the bacteria. Unlike a sourdough starter which catches yeast from the air, you can't make milk catch the correct bacteria to become yogurt. You always need a starter culture. Yes, the original yogurt was created without a starter, but it was spontaneous and very unlikely one could make it happen at home.
Other Answers:
You can't!

My mom
why would you want to do this? (apart from the fact you can't?)
just use a teaspoon of unpastuerized plain yoghurt as your starter.
Butter milk is the answer. Boil 1 quart of whole milk. When it boils up and gets to the top of the pan, remove it from the heat. When it cools so you can stick the end of your finger in it without burning it, pour about 3/4 of a 1/2 gallon container of butter milk in and stir. Place in glass jars with the top on loosely and let it sit about 15-24 hours. It should be set by then. Tighten the lids and place in fridge. There you go!!!
Making yogurt is a process similar to "reincarnation" --
you have no control once the process has started & your outcome is based on fate & destiny!
It's dangerous to try!!
The safest and easiest way is to use shop-bought live yoghurt as a starter. That way you're guaranteed that the bacteria is a SAFE bacteria!
If the wrong sort of bacteria gets in there it will be very unpleasant for you! Milk is a perfect breeding ground for things that make you VERY sick!
basic yogurt:
1 gallon of milk
1 pint of yogurt ( MAKE SURE there are active enzimes in it.. it will list it in the ingredients)
boil a gallon of milk ( you can use a half gallon...but hey . there are SO many uses for it)Watch it when it reaches boiling point because it can spill over your stove! it will get bubbly and foamy and start to rise, that is how you know it will be soon. Once it does boil... cool it down enough to stick your little pinky finger in and be able to hold it for 10 seconds comfortably. Temper the yogurt with a few tablespoons of the milk... and stir the TBSs of of milk into the yogurt... then slowly stir in the yogurt mixture into the cooled milk. stir in to make sure its smooth and there are no globs or chunks of yogurt. I like to place my pot of yogurt in the oven overnight.. at least 12-24 hrs... with ONLY the light on. Take out, place a clean towel or paper towels on top of it ( The whey -- liquid will form on top) and put it in the frigde.. do not cut into the yogurt for a day... the process will take about two days before you can enjoy it!
Tip: I like to heat my pot FIRST before putting the milk in... the scortched affect will compliment for savory uses. Make sure you squeeze the "water" off the top every time you use, or everyday. You can make so many things with it... let me know if you want some ideas!
