Answer:
can't say i've heard/seen somebody eat it that way. i would imagine that the shell would take a lot of chewing to digest.

my favorite restaurant serves edamame in a thai chili lime sauce. i suck the whole thing first, then open the pod and eat the beans.
no not really
Edamame plants are very similar to bush beans in height (Figure 2), however the pods are not edible and only the bean is eaten.
Yes, some people do (if they're cooked, not raw). I don't.
i eat the pod and seed..
i looked it up ...and in the web it says it is a matter of taste...
i actually bought some for christmas dinner and plan on adding them into a bean salad..for the vegans coming to eat..
personally i like a nice bean salad..
parboil the entire..bean and add some pinto, red onion, chick peas, some spice and oil..
yummy
NO, IT IS NASTY AND THE SKIN ARE HARD. JUST THE BEANS IS THE EDIBLE ONES
MERYY CHRISTMAS
Yes, they sell it both ways at my grocery. I tried with the pod, as I'd heard it had more fiber that way, but I didn't much care for the texture. So I'll buy the shelled edamame from now on. I like adding them to stir fry and the like for a protein boost, or I have this great recipe where you spice them and bake them which is absolutely yummy, makes a great travel snack.
Well I've never seen the pod/shell eaten. I work at a Japanese Restaurant. The actual soy bean is the only thing eaten. I think the pod/shell is to hard to eat. Here's are website, so take a look. The picture that's posted w/me is my Mgr. and I at our restaurant.

I don't know what they do in Japan, I'll have to ask my s-in-law, she's from Japan.

I season the whole thing with salt but when the flavor goes away i just throw the shell away...
yes, my parents eat all of it!
