I'm looking for a recipe for making chewy taco shells at home - they are nothing like the ones in the stores. We have two restaurants ran by hispanic people here that serve them in Muskegon, MI, and they are soooo good. I've not been able to get anyone at either restaurant to divulge the recipe.

The shells are made of corn, slightly fried, and have small perforations in them, most likely to keep them from blistering when being prepared.

They contain the same contents as any regular hard or soft shell taco would, they are just in between the two in texture - chewy.

I must say, I can't stand the store taco shells, they are so hard and are so bland. the kids don't even like the store ones after i started making my own.

Get a frying pan, some veg oil (or any fat, i think hispanics use lard), and corn shells. Put about a 1/4 inch of oil over a medium-high heat, and then using tongs, fold the taco shell, fry one side, and then flip to fry the other side of the taco. it takes about 15-20 seconds on each side. then drain upside down on papertowls.

Please be careful with grease, we had a grease fire and lost our kitchen!!!!!

get corn tortillas at your grocery store and fry them in a little bit of cooking oil

Get your corn tortillas at the store. Heat corn oil on med high heat. You will know its ready when you put a little piece of tortilla in and it bubbles sort of fast and floats to the top. Take your tortilla, fold in half and dip the bottom of the fold in the oil first to make it rounded. Lay it over on one of the sides and let it cook for about 5-15 seconds. Depends on how hot your oil is. You will know its done on that side when it starts to bubble out. Turn over and cook other side the same way. I use two forks for cooking and turning so I can shape them right. I think you can actually buy a mold for this. Drain and put on paper towels.

I cook this all the time and in fact had it for dinner tonight. Man I make the best tacos ever. Sounds like just homemade corn tortillas, and they dont' use a fancy frying gadget to turn them into a V shape... rather they proably hold them bent a bit under the oil w/ tongs.
