I'm guessing it's simply grits with gravy. I am from the South too but the only way I had them growing up is with lots of butter and salt and pepper.
My Delawarian husband tried to get me to eat creamed chipped beef on toast for breakfast. I decided to put it on grits instead. Pretty good stuff.
Grits is hominy or corn grounded up to make a porridge. Gravy is a white gravy used mostly on breakfast foods like sausage and gravy.
Gravy is good, and grits are yuck
Comfort food. Big time.
A good memory is mom slicing up the grits after they're cold from the fridge in slabs and frying 'em up.
