Fenugreek seems to be a popular ingredient in Indian food, particularly curries; however, I cannot tolerate its smell or taste (it's not an allergic reaction, I just have a strong aversion to the aroma). Occasionally friends will take me to their favorite Indian restaurant, where I always have difficulty finding anything to eat that does not contain fenugreek (except for breads). What would you suggest; spcifically, are there regional Indian cuisines or dishes that do not use this seed?

Answer:
There may be many dishes that do not contain fenugreek. Many dals/lentils will not have it - although some will. Many veggies will not have it like Alu Gobi. The best would be to ask the restaurant - they should be able to tell you.

Also there are 2 types of fenugreek in Indian food - one is the seed and one is the dried herb of the same plant. Check to see if you dont like both. Indians use it because of its healthful properties.

More info to distinguish between the two is here

Try punjabi foods -- they're sooo good and dishes like saag don't have any fenugreek. Also, things like somesas and pakarday don't have any fenugreek, but they are kind of like sidedishes.
Being a former chef and a curry nut, may sugestion is to blend your own curry powder mixture, most often stores sell the base spices, but to my knowledge fenugeek is not common is northern dishes were dairy is used, Goan were the influence is from Portugal and they like it spicy.

For me I only use dried in some dals and fresh with saag for panner or Aloo dishes, make you own spice mix, with cumin, coriander, turmeric, a chili if you wish, garam masala, but check either the ground or whole mixtures label, I throw in other spices and some blended curry powder for flavour, just be careful as if the ingredients are not written on the label, you could find it in there some how.
Avoid pickles & tandoori dishes as fenugreek is an important ingredient in these dishes ,as suggested north indian dishes, biryanis ,vegetable stuffed breads ,curd raitas are free of this spice.the suggestion of home mixed spice is a good one as you can safely avoid the spice that does not appeal to you ,while you can add a bit more of an appealing spice ,making your own spice masala mix is not as difficult as it sounds .
Me too, I can't stand fenugreek - and I loath its smell, taste and aftereffect.
Generally, North Indian recipes don't use it much - but stay away from pickles.
Tandoori dishes sometimes come with dried fenugreek leaves sprinkled on top (but not always); you could tell the waiter to omit them.

But very likely it's already an ingredient in the readymade masala mixtures used in (cheap) restaurants. I am afraid you'll have to go by hit and miss, or ask the waiter beforehand about it. You may not get a straight answer, but I am all for bringing this kind of problem to their attention.
Another taste I hate is coconut - after touring South India I am afraid I can't look at anything with even a tiny amount of coconut oil in it, without gagging.
fenugreek seems popular ingradiant
perhaps u could ask them to whip the dish u want without fenugreek in it.
