Do they do an equivalent of stew and dumplings? Would that cut it?

You must be a Brit. STODGE? Just order szaslik (pronounced Shash-wik). It's basically shish kebob.
Try Bigos
Its a seasoned "hunter" stew made from sauerkraut with chunks of various meats and sausages.
Well, to start you can order pierogi, which are circles of dough encasing various fillings - I know people who have eaten more than 10 or 15 for their main course. Then you could have Hunter's Stew, or stuffed cabbage or Polish sausage - all of which is very good.
I think i recall stew and dumplings being a popular dish over there?
Nice plate of pierogi (stuffed dumplings - if you've ever had Chinese potsticker dumplings or Japanese gyoza you'll know what to expect, but they're rather bigger - from something like a giant raviolo up to the size of a small pasty).
Come boiled, grilled or fried - grilled usually tastiest in my opinion.
See wikiness below for more ideas.
Get a nice fat Kielbasa and work the rest out from there...
A pierogi with any kind of filling is going to satisfy your stomach, they are very hearty
Pan fried beef or pork or cheese pierogi (a delish dumpling)... just make dumpling dough and you can put pretty much have any flavoured stuffing you like inside. Great entree or starter.
Kotlet schabowy - a delish crumbed pork chop, like a Wiener Schnitzel but thicker
A platter of Kielbasa Sausages with mustard. (served as a cold cut platter or warmed)
Kaczka z jab?kami - roast duck with apples and warm apple chutney style sauce.
Sztuka mi?sa - like a French ragout
Bigos - savory stew of sauerkraut served with buttered warm crusty bread.

kielbasa, which is a type of sausage, to Golabki, or cabbage rolls, hunter's stew to stuffed eggs, and from dumpling soup to mushrooms in sour cream. There is also more US known meals such as food as simple as spring salad, or beans and carrots, Polish style. Another tasty meal is sweet pierogil. There are also many other dishes containing meat and many other dishes containing fish.
