Actually Mexicans and Spanish speaking people use the same phrase that is used in English, it's a direct translation
"Mexican food"="Comida Mexicana".

I believe it is recipes that come from Mexico also the Mexican Americans that live here in the us have their recipes as well. It is all great food
In Texas, it's pretty much Tex-Mex - refried beans, tacos, burritos, tamales, and so forth all swimming in cheese. Santa Fe style has lots of texture, veggies, color, unique flavors, much less cheese used. Santa Fe is more like authentic Mexican food, but Mexican is regional and varies quite a lot.
any thing that has beans,tortillas,pico de gallo, salsa verde, (very hot stuff) any thing they cook is great.

Definitely not taco bell, and NOT any of the stuff you get in mexican restaurants in the USA.
My husband is from Tepatitlan in Jalisco Mexico near Guadalajara, and they eat a lot of meat in broth like Pozole (pronounced po-SO-lay), which is pork and pork neck bones and whole hominy in a broth. They also eat Birria (BEER-ee-ya),
which is lamb or goat meat in a spicy broth. They eat it with tortillas. They also eat tamales in corn husks with pork inside.
I learned to make tamales that are eaten mainly in Oaxaca and Veracruz...they are big tamales in banana leaves with whole chicken wings inside (yup, bones too). I also make a lot of meat in Mole sauce (MO-lay)....the most popular is black and is sweet, but that is disgusting. I make red mole, which is made from a puree of hot peppers with ground toasted pumpkin seeds.
I also make chiles poblanos stuffed with queso chihuahua. These are fresh poblano chiles stuffed with cheese, then dredged in flour and a souffle mixture then fried, and eaten with beans and rice.
After all this, he DOES eat refried beans a lot. He loves them. Unfortunately the stereotype "beaner" is true for him! ;)))
For dessert, he loves flan (custard), and rice pudding, and a special dish called capirotada (ca-pee-ro-TAH-dah)...Kind of like a bread pudding that has raisins, peanuts, and bananas in it. Very traditional for his town.
actually it depends on the area. i know mexicans who are from the yucatan and they eat a lot of shellfish, birds, etc, but if you go farther inland, then it's a very different menu (more lamb, chicken, beef, etc). In spain, mexican, carribean, and latin american foods are considered to be spicy, whereas spanish foods are milder and are flavored from herbs more than spices. at least those are from my first hand experiences, some people may have had different things...
