I know it's a spice but where or what does is come from and how is it more commonly used?

Answers:
It is called "Hing" in India. It is used in dhals (lentil dishes). Can also be used to prepare vegetarian dishes like cabbage, spinach, carrots etc. Use the standard recipe below substituting each veg for the dhal or a combination of the vegetables. Good luck.

-Fry half teaspoon mustard seeds in oil (1 tbsp)
-To it add chopped onion and fry till they turn slightly brown
-Then add the hing (only a pinch) it is great for preventing the gas caused by lentils. Works like Beano.
-Then add 1 or 2 sliced and de-seeded green chillis
-Add half teaspoon turneric (haldi powder)
-Add 1 teaspoon sugar
-Add half teaspoon garlic chopped, quarter teaspoon ginger chopped, and continue to fry this mixture.
-Add to it three-quarter cup of masoor dhal (tiny red lentils which were soaked for half an hour and drained). Add salt to taste - about half teaspoon and also 1 1/2 cup of water.
-Cook for about 20 minutes or till it is like a porridge.
-Garnish with chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves before serving.

The hing has many medicinal properties, but never use more than a pinch. Also do not allow it to burn - use a low heat when you add it to the oil. Once the dhal is added you can turn up the heat. Some believe that consuming too much hing can cause a pregnant woman to have a miscarriage and therefore most pregnant women in India avoid using it.

It is a kind of masala item that adds taste to your food.

Asafoetida (Ferula assafoetida, family Apiaceae) is a species of Ferula native to Iran. It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 2 m tall, with stout, hollow, somewhat succulent stems 5-8 cm diameter at the base of the plant. The leaves are 30-40 cm long, tripinnate or even more finely divided, with a stout basal sheath clasping the stem. The flowers are yellow, produced in large compound umbels.

its a spice used in indian recipies that is supposed to stop you from farting, it is very pungent and should only be added in small quantites, i think that it actually makes you fart and your farts smwell baaaad, but i cant get enough indian food so im just going to keep on doing it It is also called "Hing" and most Indian stores (as in Continental Indian, not Native American Indian) would have it. It's a little like the blend of spices called curry but not exactly. It is more smoky in flavor. It has a lot of medicinal purposes too, and one is that it regulates menstrual periods. I use it in Mung Dal dishes made with mung beans.

yes you are bank on target that its a spice. its got a very pungent odour and cannot be used in excess. It comes from Indian subcontinent and its called " Hinge" in Hindi Language. Its got a lot of medicinal values and is put in the food to add flavour and is considered best for digestion.
